Allergic rhinitis, also referred to as hay fever, is an allergic reaction that affects the respiratory system, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, and watery eyes, nasal blockage, itching, and irritation of the nose.
What is allergic rhinitis/allergy(hay fever)?
Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, is an allergic condition where the immune system overreacts to airborne substances (allergens) such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mould. This reaction primarily affects the nasal passages and causes symptoms like sneezing, runny or congested nose, itchy eyes or watery eyes, and an itchy throat or nose.
There are two main types of allergic rhinitis:
- 1. Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever): Triggered by outdoor allergens, such as pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds, and typically occurs in specific seasons.
- 2. Perennial Allergic Rhinitis: Caused by indoor allergens like dust mites, pet dander, or mould, and can occur throughout the year.
What triggers allergic rhinitis/allergy (hay fever)?
Allergic rhinitis is triggered by allergens—substances that provoke an immune response in sensitive individuals. Common triggers include:
- 1.Pollen: From trees, grasses, and weeds, often causing seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever).
- 2.Dust mites: Microscopic organisms found in household dust, bedding, and upholstery, commonly causing perennial allergic rhinitis.
- 3.Pet dander: Tiny flakes of skin, saliva, or urine shed by animals like cats, dogs, and birds.
- 4.Mould spores: Indoor and outdoor mould can release spores that become airborne and cause allergic reactions.
- 5.Cockroach droppings: Common in urban environments, these can trigger allergic reactions, especially in perennial allergic rhinitis.
- 6.Smoke, pollution, or strong odours: While not allergens themselves, they can irritate the nasal passages and worsen symptoms.
These allergens, when inhaled, cause the immune system to release chemicals like histamine, leading to the symptoms of allergic rhinitis such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes.
What are the symptoms of allergic rhinitis?
The symptoms of allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, can vary in intensity but typically include:
- 1.Sneezing: Frequent, often uncontrollable.
- 2.Runny or stuffy nose: Clear nasal discharge or nasal congestion.
- 3.Itchy nose, throat, or eyes: A persistent itch that affects these areas.
- 4.Watery eyes: Eyes may also become red and swollen.
- 5.Postnasal drip: Mucus running down the back of the throat.
- 6.Coughing: Often due to postnasal drip.
- 7.Headache or facial pressure: Caused by sinus congestion.
- 8.Fatigue: Due to poor sleep from nasal congestion and symptoms.
- 9.Decreased sense of smell: Temporary loss or reduction in the ability to smell.
These symptoms can range from mild to severe and are usually triggered after exposure to specific allergens like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mould.
Diagnosis of allergic rhinitis(allergic tests).
- 1. Medical History:
- The doctor will ask about your symptoms, their duration, and whether they are seasonal or year-round.
- Family history of allergies or asthma may also be considered.
- 2. Physical Examination:
- The doctor will examine the nasal passages for signs of swelling, redness, or inflammation.
- The throat, eyes, and ears may also be checked for signs of allergic reaction (such as redness or fluid buildup).
- 3. Allergy Testing:
- 4. Skin Prick Test: Small amounts of common allergens are applied to the skin, usually on the forearm or back. If you’re allergic, a raised bump (wheal) will appear at the site of the allergen.
- 5.Blood Test (Specific IgE Test): This test measures the levels of allergy-related antibodies (IgE) in your blood. It helps identify allergens if skin testing is not suitable.
- 6. Nasal Endoscopy:
- In some cases, a thin tube with a light (endoscope) may be inserted into the nose to get a better view of the nasal passages and sinuses, especially if there are signs of chronic inflammation.
- 7. Other Tests:
- If asthma or other respiratory conditions are suspected, lung function tests (such as spirometry) might be performed to assess breathing difficulties.
After the diagnosis, the doctor will suggest treatment options based on the severity and type of allergic rhinitis.
Scope of homoeopathy in treating and curing allergic rhinitis/Allergy(hay fever)
I have been managing allergic rhinitis for the past 20 years in Bangalore. Studies indicate that around 20% of the city’s population experiences some form of allergic symptoms. We’ve treated a variety of allergic rhinitis cases in people of different ages and have successfully provided long-lasting relief using homoeopathic medicines. Our approach focuses on alleviating immediate symptoms, followed by ongoing treatment to strengthen the immune system. This helps patients remain symptom-free, even without the need for continued medication.
Clinical experience of homoeopathic medication in treating allergic rhinitis/allergy
We conducted an analysis of 50 respiratory allergy cases from our clinic, focusing on evaluating the effectiveness of homoeopathic medicines in alleviating symptoms and promoting recovery. The cases were assessed using the TNSS (Total Nasal Symptom Score) method, where we looked at symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, nasal itching, sneezing, and sleep disturbances. Each symptom was graded on a scale from 0 to 4, representing none, mild, moderate, and severe levels.
Clinically, we’ve observed that 61% of patients begin responding to continuous homoeopathic treatment within the first two weeks, and 92% experience significant symptom relief after one month. Throughout the treatment period, patients largely remain symptom-free, with only occasional, milder symptom flare-ups. Treatment generally lasts 8 months to a year, after which patients remain free of symptoms without the need for further medication.
In children, who often present with recurring colds and coughs, a 6-8 month treatment course has proven highly effective in keeping them symptom-free. These symptoms commonly occur during lifestyle changes, such as teething, starting school, or participating in new activities like swimming.
How effective is homoeopathic medication in controlling and curing allergic rhinitis(hay fever)?
Clinically, homoeopathic medications have proven to be highly effective in both controlling and curing allergic rhinitis.
What are the common homoeopathic medicines used in treating allergic rhinitis?
In addition to the acute, short-acting remedies, we always prescribe a constitutional medicine tailored to each individual patient. This remedy is selected based on the patient’s physical and mental constitution and covers the totality of their symptoms. It is designed to provide long-lasting relief and is capable of boosting the patient’s immunity, ultimately leading to a permanent cure.
- 1. Arsenic album 30 – is one of the most commonly used homoeopathic medicines to treat allergic rhinitis, especially when symptoms like sneezing and a watery nose are prominent. It is particularly effective when the nasal discharge is thin and irritating.
- 2.Allium cepa 30- A prominent medicine for hay fever when running nose is prominent along with irritating watery discharge from eyes. Nasal polyp and congestion of the nose is also prominent.
- 3.Hepar sulp 30- when nose block is triggered with cold or cold weather. Nose is blocked with thick whitish/ creamy phlegm. With post nasal dripping and hacking cough.
- 4.Pulstilla 30-is a commonly used homoeopathic remedy when allergic rhinitis symptoms are triggered by climate changes. It is characterized by nasal blockage and sneezing, particularly in the morning, with thick, greenish-yellow nasal discharge. There may also be watery discharge from the eyes. Individuals with a tendency for middle ear infections or chronic sinus infections often benefit from this remedy, indicating the deeper, chronic nature of their condition.
- 5.Sulphur 200- this is the common medicine we give to children to boost their immunity and prevent recurrence of their complaint and remain symptoms free after the treatment .
- 6.Tuberculinum 1m- we often start a case with this remedy if the patient suffers from severe symptoms which affects their quality of life.
NB: It is always advisable to consult a qualified homoeopath before taking these medicines. Self-medication is not recommended or encouraged, as proper diagnosis and treatment should be individualized based on the patient’s unique symptoms and constitution.
